Restoring Our Brick Facade

After seeing other homes in our neighborhood that had the same layout and exposed brick facade, we knew we wanted to try and restore ours. Originally, we were going to try using a chemical paint remover (like this one). Since our house was built in the 60’s, Kevin was worried that this might eat away at the brick. After testing a small section with an angle grinder, this method proved to be successful.

With a light touch, he used the more abrasive 40 grit sandpaper for the first pass, and followed up with 80 grit for the smoothing, finishing work. If you have brick and want to try this approach…

Here’s what we used:

  • Angled

  • 40 grit sandpaper wheel

  • 80 grit sandpaper wheel

  • Painter’s plastic, to cover doors, windows, anything you don’t want brick dust to get on

  • Ear plugs

  • N95 respiratory mask

  • Safety glasses
