Very Hungry Caterpillar Family Halloween Costume
Our family Halloween costumes have officially become whatever Margot is into that year. When she was 15 months old, we were Sesame Street. The following year, with 27-month-old Margot and 3-month-old Wyatt, we went with The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Margot was the butterfly, and Wyatt was, of course, the Very Hungry Caterpillar. I wanted to keep the costumes simple and affordable for Kevin and me, so he went as a pickle and I went as a strawberry—two of the foods the caterpillar eats his way through. You could also add a black hole to either costume to make it look like the caterpillar has actually eaten through you.
For the kids, I had grand plans to make their costumes myself: butterfly wings out of cardboard for Margot and a hand-sewn caterpillar costume for Wyatt. That did not come to fruition with a newborn.
Instead, I went the store-bought route and spent more time trying to figure out how to integrate the baby carrier into my costume. Since Wyatt was going to spend most of trick-or-treating in the carrier anyway, I wanted his costume to work with it instead of having to cover him up or take his costume off.
For my strawberry costume, we cut three slits into the costume for the baby carrier straps to feed through. Wyatt wore a green onesie underneath his caterpillar costume, and we tucked the costume around the outside of the carrier.
Thankfully, everything worked, because Kevin cut the openings the day of Halloween and we didn't actually try on our costumes together until we were already at our friend's house and it was time to go trick-or-treating.
