Designing Margot’s Nursery

Shapes, just as much as neutral colors, inspired this room. Regardless if we were having a boy or girl, I wanted to create a gender-neutral nursery that didn’t feel too baby-ish and could grow with our child.

The design for the nursery started with a rug. Originally, I wanted this Sarah Sherman Samuel Irregular Checkerboard Rug but couldn’t justify the price. Then I came across this West Elm Checkered Rug that looked softer and more nursery-appropriate. Sand became a nursery color and everything else flowed from this.

Based on the philosophy of growing with our child, we got the Nestig 3-in-1 crib that transitions from mini crib to full-sized crib to toddler bed. To go with it, I picked this mobile based on color (sand and sage) and how serene it felt. The shape of the clouds influenced these Sarah Sherman Samuel Wave Shelves, which also led to the Vitruvi Cloud Humidifier (which we didn’t get based on tabletop space) and the Honey & Ivy Jelli Table Lamp (which we got in place of the diffuser). We added this dimmer to the table lamp that creates the perfect ambiance for nighttime feeds (we even put the sconces in our bedroom on dimmers to keep lighting low for middle-of-the-night wake-ups). The Keekaroo Peanut Changer also had this wavy shape.

I was drawn to the contrast of soft edges, geometric shapes, and mixed materials. I picked up this fun clock in Houston when I was 21 weeks pregnant. The Ubbi Diaper Pail had the right colors and added a bit of randomness while the terrazzo print still had that organic feel. Another big part of the room was the dresser that would double as a changing table. The facade of this dresser felt fun and we got the matching nightstand so we have a full set that can transition into a big girl room. To contrast the wood and to match the checkers on the rug, I found this wire hamper in light beige and went with a similar style for the diaper caddy.

We waited a little too long to order a chair, so I kind of lucked out with getting a bougier glider. I had my eye on this Babyletto Cali pillowback chair, but after reading reviews that it was noisy and not smooth, I frantically started looking for another style that would ship before Margot was born. We ended up with an Oilo Studio quick ship glider that was well worth the investment. It’s so comfortable and the fabric is performance-based so any spills (e.g., breastmilk) can be easily cleaned.

The finishing touch was adding some artwork. We had this Encinitas print hanging in our old apartment and felt it was appropriate since that’s where Margot was born. For the main art, I wanted something that felt hand-drawn. We were torn between an Upton print (however, we already have 2 in the house), this Spicy Marg print (because Marg…Margot), or this Blakeley Made print that reminded us of the San Elijo Lagoon in Cardiff.

Overall, her nursery turned out so peaceful and it’s one of our favorite rooms in the house. We spend so much time in here, from all of our diaper changes to feedings and plenty of gym time.
